ChemBioDraw Activation

To download and activate ChemBioOffice/ChemBioDraw VERSION 17 software:

  1. Go to to download and register your Caltech email address to claim your personal activation code. 

To download and activate your ChemBIoOffice/ChemBioDraw VERSION 16 OR EARLIER software:

  1. Go to to download and register your Caltech email address to have a personal serial number sent to you.
    • Note that you may also download version 16 software directly from the webstore.
  2. Within the ChemDraw/ChemOffice software is an option to 'Activate Software.'
    • In Windows, this should be under the Help menu.
    • Mac users should find this under the ChemDraw menu.
  3. Enter your personal serial number here.
  4. If you are an administrator for lab computers and would like a single serial number to activate multiple installations, please request this at (request type IMSS > Software Licensing & Distribution > Other).


Issue: After installing ChemBioDraw Ultra 14.0, nothing happens after entering the activation information.

Solution: This issue occurs because by default you do not have the necessary permissions to write to the Library folders where the activation information is stored. In order to correct this problem:

  1. Go to Finder
  2. Go to Macintosh HD\Users and select your user name.
  3. Right click in Finder window now and click on Show View Optionsx
  4. Check the option at the bottom Show Library Folderx . This will show the Library folder.
  5. Now Right click on Library folder and click on 'Get Info'.
  6. At the bottom, you will find 'Sharing and Permission' in which change the permission to Read and Writex
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the following folders:
    • Macintosh HD\Users\User Name\Library\Preferences\ByHost
    • Macintosh HD\Users\Shared\Library\Preferences
    • Note: If you do not have any of these folders, please go ahead and create them

Remove ChemDraw from the Applications folder by sending it to the trash, download and run the ChemDraw uninstaller from

Download the installation files again from

Reinstall the application, and try to complete the activation process again.
