Learn more about options you can take to reduce your security risks.
On January 14, 2020 Microsoft stopped all updates for Windows 7, ending the support for a decade-old operating system. This means that while your computer will continue to function, you will be vulnerable to security risks and viruses because you will no longer receive software and security updates from Microsoft.
If you are not sure what operating system you are using, visit this Microsoft article "Which version of Windows operating system am I running?"
If you have a Windows 7 computer, here are some options:
Option 1:
- If your computer is less then 4 years old, upgrade your computer to Windows 10. To upgrade your computer, first determine whether you have a 32-Bit or 64-Bit operating system. Then go to software.caltech.edu to download and install Windows 10 on your computer. Note: Windows 10 is only available to eligible faculty and staff for Caltech-owned computers; see here for details.
- Before upgrading to Windows 10, we recommend that you first upload important personal files to Box or OneDrive.
- After downloading the installation files for Windows 10, follow these steps to upgrade: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/enterprise/windows-7-to-windows-10-upgrade-manual
Option 2:
