IMSS (we) has recently observed instances of offensive material being printed from unsecured printers on campus. These incidents occurred because those printers were accessible from the internet without proper security measures. To prevent such occurrences and maintain a secure printing environment, we strongly recommend following the guidelines outlined in our printer security documentation:/services/security/issues/printers
Printer Port Changes on April 4, 2024
We will be implementing the following measures to mitigate risks and still securely connect printers to the Caltech network and avoid unwanted printing.
Blocking Incoming Traffic to Ports:
-Port 515 (Line Printer Daemon Port): This port was historically used for printer communication and is still supported on some printers.
-Port 631 (Internet Printing Port): This is the modern printing port.
By taking these steps, we aim to enhance printer security and minimize the risk of unauthorized printing.
