DHCP for Windows
By setting up your computer to use DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol), the IP address and other network information needed to successfully connect your computer to Caltech's network and for you to use the Internet will be automatically provided by a DHCP server.
Notes about DHCP
- The IP address and other network information provided to your computer through DHCP are not permanent; they will change.
- Do not regard any IP address that your computer obtained through DHCP as a static IP address.
- If DHCP does not meet your needs and you need a static IPaddress, information about Caltech IP Address Guide is available, including how to request a Static IP Address and what criteria you must meet.
- If you're not sure whether to use DHCP or a Static IP Address, please try using DHCP first; you can always request a Static IP Address later if it turns out that DHCP doesn't meet your needs.
